Foundation Bearing Pressure: Footing Area and Soil Limits

**SEO keyword:** foundation bearing pressure calculator

**Meta description:** Estimate average foundation pressure and understand why soil investigation and eccentricity matter.

What average bearing pressure represents

Average contact pressure is the vertical load divided by footing plan area, provided the load is concentric and contact pressure is approximately uniform. It is not the same as allowable bearing resistance or settlement performance.

Simple footing calculation

For a vertical service load of 250 kN acting concentrically on a 2 m × 2 m footing, the area is 4 m² and the average pressure is q = 250/4 = 62.5 kPa. This example excludes footing self-weight and overburden changes.

Preliminary footing sizing

If an independently justified allowable pressure is 150 kPa, a first-pass area estimate is A = 250/150 = 1.67 m² before additional loads and design adjustments. A square footing with this area would have a side of approximately 1.29 m; that is not a final design dimension.

Why the soil report matters

Allowable pressure depends on the ground profile, groundwater, foundation depth, settlement tolerance and the geotechnical design approach. Eccentric loads can produce highly nonuniform pressure and possible loss of contact.
